# **Dupuytren's contracture: spiritual meaning and emotional causes**

The emotional and spiritual meaning of Dupuytren's contracture: how fingers curling into the palm may relate to holding on, control and closing off.

**In short**

Spiritually, Dupuytren's contracture is often linked to a tightening in your attitudes, a withdrawal from a partner or children, and a struggle over the reins, either feeling held back by someone or not wanting to let go yourself.

## What Dupuytren's contracture is

Dupuytren's contracture is a condition in which the tissue under the skin of the palm slowly thickens and tightens. It usually starts as small lumps or pits in the palm, which can grow into firm cords. Over months or years, these cords can pull one or more fingers into a bent position towards the palm, most often the ring finger and the little finger. It is usually painless, but the bent fingers can make it hard to lay the hand flat, put on gloves, shake hands or reach into a pocket.

The condition is named after Baron Guillaume Dupuytren, a 19th-century French surgeon who described it. It is more common in men over 50 and in people of Northern European descent, which is why it is sometimes called "Viking disease". It tends to run in families and is more frequent in people with [**diabetes**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/blood-sugar/diabetes), people who smoke or drink heavily, and people taking some epilepsy medicines. Mild cases are often just watched. When the fingers bend enough to get in the way, options include a needle procedure to divide the cord, surgery to remove the tissue, and hand therapy afterwards. The condition can come back after treatment.

## The emotional meaning of Dupuytren's contracture

The hand opens to give and closes to hold, as the [**arms and hands**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/arms-and-hands) page explains. In Dupuytren's contracture, it gradually stays closed. Spiritually, this is read as a tightening, a kind of clenching, in your attitudes.

### Withdrawal and closing off

The curling of the fingers is linked to a withdrawal into yourself, and a certain closing off towards your partner or your children. The ring finger is the finger of close bonds and the little finger is the finger of family, as the page on [**finger pain**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/arms-and-hands/finger-pain) describes. That these are the fingers that bend first gives the question its direction: what has closed between you and the people closest to you?

### Held by the reins

You may have the feeling that someone is holding the reins of your life, that you are "kept on a bridle", or that someone wants to put the brakes on a project of yours. Spiritually, the bent fingers can echo the hand that is held back.

### Or not letting go of the reins

The opposite reading is also possible. Perhaps you are the one who wants to possess too much, who finds it hard to let go, who will not "loosen the reins". You would like more control over your life, and yet everything seems to slip away and you feel you lack the strength to hold it. With a hand that stays closed and tense, two questions remain: what do you want to keep for yourself at all costs, and what are you no longer willing to take?

## Left side or right side?

Dupuytren's contracture often affects both hands, but rarely to the same degree. The spiritual interpretation of the [**left and right sides of the body**](https://www.body-hemisync.com/guides/left-vs-right-side-of-the-body) can add a nuance:

- **Right hand:** the active side of control, decisions, work and projects, and the men in your life. The question may be about a project held back, or about authority and rivalry.
- **Left hand:** the receptive side of feelings, tenderness and receiving, and the women in your life. The question may be about closing off emotionally, or finding it hard to let love in.

## A gentler way to hold it

The direction is to become more flexible and open by expressing your feelings and inner states more freely, and to look for the deeper meaning of your life.

- **Notice where you clench.** Watch for moments when your attitude tightens, as if your hand were closing.
- **Reopen one close bond.** Say something you have been keeping from your partner, a child or a family member.
- **Ask who holds the reins.** Is someone truly holding you back, or are you the one gripping?
- **Let go of one thing.** Choose something you are holding on to out of habit or fear, and loosen your hold.
- **Share how you feel.** Expressing your inner state is the opening the hand is asking for.
- **Look for the bigger meaning.** Ask what really matters to you now, beyond control.
- **Keep your hand appointments.** Treatment and therapy keep the fingers moving while you explore the rest.

## **Questions to ask yourself**

Take your time with these. There are no right answers; simply notice what comes up.

- Where have my attitudes tightened, like a hand that will not open?
- Have I closed myself off from my partner or my children?
- Do I feel someone is holding the reins of my life, or putting the brakes on a project?
- Or is it me who will not let go of the reins?
- What am I trying to keep for myself at all costs?
- What am I no longer willing to take in?

***Affirmation ***

> “I open my hand a little more each day. I become more flexible, share what I feel, and look for the deeper meaning of my life.”

## **When to see a doctor**

**Please seek medical advice if you notice:**

- A lump or thickening in the palm, or a finger that starts to bend towards the palm. A GP can confirm what it is.
- You can no longer lay your hand flat on a table, or the bent finger gets in the way of daily tasks. Treatment works best before the bend becomes severe.
- A new lump in the hand that grows quickly, is painful or changes, to rule out other causes.
- Numbness, coldness or poor healing after treatment or surgery.
- Signs of contracture coming back after treatment, which is common and worth reviewing.

## **Related conditions**

**Carpal tunnel syndrome**

Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of a nerve in the wrist, with numbness in the fingers, often at night. It is read as a season of change in which you feel relegated, squeezed by responsibilities, and unable to loosen your grip.

**Finger pain**

Spiritually, finger pain is often linked to the details of daily action, and each finger carries its own theme. The thumb is pressure and worry, the index authority, the middle finger creativity and anger, the ring finger close bonds, and the little finger family and intuition.

**Diabetes**

Diabetes is often read as a sorrow of love. Sugar stands for tenderness, and high blood sugar for sadness, a refusal of sweetness, and reserves kept ready for a fight you do not want.
